The Southeast Asian Games is a competition which has been taking place every two years since 1959 with the first edition having been held in Bangkok. It was founded by Thailand, Myanmar,Malaysia, Laos, South Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore in order to strengthen the relationship between the South-eastern Asian countries. There are currently eleven countries participating in this sporting event including Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines, which were admitted into the Games a few years later. The last addition to the SEA Games was made in 2003 when Timor-Leste participated for the first time in the Games that took place in Hanoi.

During the first year of the SEA Games athletes participated in only twelve sports, whereas currently there is no limit to the number of sports that may be contested. The host country gets to decide which sports will be featured, some of them are official Olympic sports and others are only played in the SEA Games, often introduced by the host country. Thirty-six sports will be played during this 28th Singapore SEA Games, including Floorball, a type of floor hockey that has been added by Singapore this year.
